Howard Court in Great Ayton is one of those venues that truly comes into its own in winter — warm, atmospheric, elegant and full of character. Abbie and Carl’s December twilight wedding was the perfect example of how magical a winter wedding can be, especially when couples fully embrace the season rather than fighting against it.
As a North East wedding photographer with a natural, documentary approach, I’m always drawn to weddings that prioritise real moments, atmosphere and experience over rigid timelines. Abbie and Carl’s day did exactly that — from their intimate indoor ceremony in front of Howard Court’s grand Christmas tree to an unforgettable confetti walk in the dark, and later, creative flash portraits that turned the winter night into something truly special.
Why Howard Court Is a Standout North Yorkshire Wedding Venue
Located in Great Ayton, on the edge of the North Yorkshire countryside, Howard Court offers the perfect blend of country house elegance and relaxed charm. It’s a venue that feels welcoming rather than formal — ideal for couples who want a day that flows naturally.
This makes it one of the most accessible and welcoming Teesside wedding venues for couples who want a laid-back but beautifully organised day.
As a North Yorkshire wedding venue, Howard Court works beautifully for:
Indoor ceremonies with atmosphere and warmth
Twilight and winter weddings
Relaxed celebrations that still feel elegant
Couples who value experience and emotion over perfection
The interiors are filled with character, the grounds are stunning year-round, and the team make the day feel effortless — which is exactly what couples need.
A Festive Indoor Ceremony Beneath the Christmas Tree
Abbie and Carl chose to hold their ceremony indoors, directly in front of Howard Court’s stunning Christmas tree — and it couldn’t have been more perfect.
The warm glow of the lights, the festive décor and the intimate setting created a ceremony that felt cosy, emotional and deeply personal. This is where documentary wedding photography really shines — capturing subtle glances, nervous smiles and quiet moments that might otherwise be missed.
Indoor ceremonies like this are a reminder that you don’t need perfect weather to have a beautiful wedding — you just need the right atmosphere.
Confetti in the Dark — Embracing the Winter Light
One of my favourite moments of the day came immediately after the ceremony: confetti in the dark.
Rather than seeing the fading daylight as a limitation, Abbie and Carl embraced it — and that’s where creativity comes in. Using flash photography in a controlled, intentional way allows me to preserve the energy of the moment while enhancing it visually.
The result?Excited guests, laughter in the cold air, confetti catching the light, and images that feel alive — not staged.
This is a big part of my natural style as a Teesside wedding photographer: working with what’s happening, not interrupting it.

Why I Use Flash — Even for Candid, Documentary Photography
There’s a common misconception that flash photography and candid storytelling don’t mix. In reality, when used properly, flash becomes a tool that supports documentary wedding photography rather than detracting from it.
At Abbie and Carl’s wedding, flash allowed me to:
Capture moments naturally, even in low light
Preserve the real atmosphere of the evening
Create creative wedding portraits without long interruptions
Keep couples with their guests instead of pulling them away
Later in the evening, once the party was in full swing, I asked Abbie and Carl for just a few minutes outside. With the help of a very willing bridesmaid holding my light, we created a gorgeous creative portrait that felt cinematic, intimate and completely true to them.
It took only minutes — and then they were straight back to enjoying their night.
Creative Wedding Portraits Without Stealing You From Your Day
One of the biggest concerns couples have is being taken away from their guests for long periods. I’m always mindful of that.
My approach to creative wedding portraits is simple:
Keep them relaxed
Keep them short
Keep them natural
Keep them meaningful
At Howard Court, the setting lends itself perfectly to this approach — whether that’s during daylight or well into the evening. Abbie and Carl’s portraits are proof that you don’t need long photo sessions to create something special.
