A relaxed August wedding for Natalie & Laman | Documentary wedding photography in the North East
Wedding Photography at The Story, Durham – Quick Overview
The Story in Durham is a modern registry office wedding venue ideal for couples who want an intimate, relaxed ceremony in the heart of the city. It offers great natural light, a striking staircase for family photos, and easy access to nearby locations for short, natural couples portraits.
As a North East wedding photographer, I regularly photograph weddings at The Story using a documentary, candid approach, working quickly and calmly to capture real moments — even in unpredictable weather. This venue suits couples who want meaningful photos without long, posed sessions.
If you’re planning a wedding at The Story registry office in Durham and are looking for a photographer who works in a natural, candid, documentary style, this real wedding is a perfect example of how relaxed, meaningful moments can be captured — even when the weather has other ideas.
Natalie and Laman’s August wedding at The Story was a brilliant reminder that you don’t need perfection, sunshine or hours of posed photos to tell the story of a wedding day beautifully. What you do need is space to enjoy the day — and a photographer who knows how to work quickly, calmly and creatively around whatever unfolds.
As a North East wedding photographer, The Story is one of my favourite Durham venues for intimate, modern ceremonies with real character.
Why The Story is a brilliant Durham registry office wedding venue
Located in the heart of Durham, The Story offers a contemporary yet historic setting that feels perfect for couples who want something a little different from a traditional registry office. The architecture, light and sweeping staircase all lend themselves brilliantly to documentary wedding photography.
For Natalie and Laman, it was the ideal backdrop for a relaxed ceremony focused on family, connection and celebrating with the people who mattered most — including their three young boys, who played a big part in the day.
A rainy August ceremony… and a quick-thinking group photo
August weddings don’t always mean sunshine — and on this day, rain was very much on the horizon.
Immediately after the ceremony, with the weather closing in, we moved quickly outside to capture a full group photograph of all the guests with The Story as a backdrop. Using my drone, I was able to create a unique overhead image that brought everyone together in a single moment before the rain properly set in.
This is a great example of how a calm, documentary approach allows couples to stay present while I adapt around them — no stress, no delays, just a quick moment captured naturally.
Family moments on the grand staircase
Back inside, we took advantage of the venue’s beautiful interior and headed to the grand staircase for a few relaxed photos of Natalie and Laman with their three boys.
These weren’t stiff or over-posed images — just a few gentle prompts, a bit of movement, and space for them to be themselves. Moments like this are exactly why couples who value candid wedding photography tend to choose The Story.
An intimate reception at Durham Amateur Rowing Club
After the ceremony, the celebrations continued at Durham Amateur Rowing Club, a brilliant riverside venue that perfectly suited the couple’s laid-back plans.
The reception was intimate, relaxed and full of personality — featuring:
a BBQ
an ice cream van
plenty of laughter
and later, a live band that brought the evening to life
Although the rain continued for much of the afternoon, the outdoor canopy provided shelter for guests and allowed us to keep things moving smoothly.
This is a big part of my natural style as a Teesside wedding photographer: working with what’s happening, not interrupting it.
Love the idea of natural, candid photography like this ?
Making great photos happen, whatever the weather
Despite the persistent rain, I was able to set up some discreet lighting under the canopy to capture the formal family and group photos Natalie and Laman had requested — without rushing anyone or making it feel like a production.
This flexibility is a big part of my natural style as a Teesside wedding photographer. I plan for the unexpected so couples don’t have to.
Natural couples portraits by the river (in just 10 minutes)
Later in the day, the rain eased — briefly — giving us around ten minutes to step outside by the river.
That was all we needed.
The rowing club’s riverside setting made an ideal backdrop for a handful of creative wedding portraits that felt relaxed, natural and completely unforced. This part of the day perfectly highlights my approach: you don’t need long photoshoots or complicated posing to create images that feel genuine and meaningful.
For couples who want to enjoy their wedding rather than disappear for photos, this is exactly how I work.
An evening full of energy, music and movement
As the evening unfolded, the atmosphere inside the rowing club was electric. With a live band setting the tone, guests filled the dance floor and the celebrations carried on well into the night.
This is where documentary wedding photography really shines — capturing the laughter, movement and emotion as it naturally happens, without interruption.
